Bonus Days 11 - 16 (December 23 - 28)

Took a little time off writing.  Christmas came and went.

Connie was able to get out to Pioneer's Christmas Dinner.  Actually ate quite a bit for her.

We took a walk around the park with her in her wheelchair, which we'd like to make more of a habit.  We took a drive to the beach, which was short lived, but she enjoyed it.

The day after Christmas, we had a visit from her nurse.  She made it to the Parrotheads of Port Aransas 4th Thursday Happy Hour after visiting with Dan Sullivan and friends on the beach.  Dan was celebrating his 50th birthday.

Friday, the 27th, we made the decision to cancel our cruise in January.  It was just going to be too much for the both of us, and her time in the room and in bed was going to be greater than the time out of there.

After a visit by the nurse's aide to get her showered up, she made it to Moby Dick's for a performance by The Detentions.  Didn't eat much, but had two beers.  Afterward, she was pretty whipped.

The Buckeyes played in their semi final game against Clemson on Saturday.  She was in bed most of the day, tried to rally when some friends came over, but went to bed around kickoff.

She's beginning to know her limitations.  When she doesn't feel "it", she taps out and goes to bed.  She tries to dress herself, and is successful most of the time.  She's getting worse on the stairs.  That's probably going to be our immediate future.

Bonus Days 9 & 10 (December 21 - 22)

Had our visit on Saturday and our follow up visit on Sunday with the weekend nurse for New Century Hospice.  I swear to God, I've bought houses and signed less paperwork.

Nurses will call on us 3 times a week, social worker will call on us once a month, Volunteers will be out as needed to help with hygiene issues, etc.   It's a real team effort.

While I always thought it was a death sentence and a wait till the last minute thing, we're finding out that the earlier you start "the process", the more benefits you receive.

While it's a dark subject, so far, this "team" has been very good to work with so far.  Not very timely, but a part of that is the business they're in, too.

Bonus Days 7 & 8 (December 19 - 20th)

Yesterday was a good morning, then after her afternoon nap, a bad rest of the day.

We settled on a hospice, New Century Hospice.  They called us after the third place that I called listed as "in network" (who wasn't) by our insurance, called them to refer us.  Thank goodness for them doing that.  Our insurance has NOT been helpful during this process.

As soon as they got our information and ran our pre certification, they were out here to sign papers.  I would guess in their business, time is literally of the essence, as people could be calling with days left for their loved one.  I don't think that's our case, but we'll see.  One of those papers was a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) form which is required in Texas for EMT's.  EMT's are required by state law to do everything necessary to bring a person back if they've stopped breathing or their heart has stopped.  With this form, she'll be spared those chest compressions, etc.

Today (the 20th), we'll have a nurse come out to do an evaluation.  Then, along with "the team", she'll make a plan for how many visits Connie will need, what kind of supplies she'll need, etc.  As I wondered out loud if we were unique being in an RV, guy from Hospice said they had a client out here (Pioneer RV Park) last year.

The end will be a journey.

Bonus Day 6 (December 18th)

As with all things insurance, finding a hospice that's "in network" and one that we're comfortable with suck.  Our insurance website listed 4 in Corpus Christi.  I contacted all four of them.  One had their phone disconnected.  One told me they hadn't been in network since 2018.  One took all my information, then found out they were out of network.  One still hasn't gotten back to me with benefits.  <sigh>.

Connie's doing "OK" comparatively.  She's getting dressed and sitting up.  She's eating, which is great.  She's fairly focused, still having a ton of cognitive issues.

Knowing how stubborn she is about a lot of things, she'll be with us for quite awhile which is our best hope.

Bonus Day 5 (December 17th)

I for some reason have always remembered the first time I heard the phrase using "hospice".  It was the spring of 1984 in the teacher's lounge at Greeneview High School.  Don Green and I were in there with sub teacher Ed Prellar.  Somebody said that somebody was "going to hospice".

Don and I looked at each other.  No idea what the hell Hospice was.  Then, Ed said, it's where people go to die.

Understand, I was 23 years old.  I envisioned elephants going step by step, side by side, to their final resting place.  I couldn't shake that image and, obviously, I still can't.

So, on this day, I started the process of enlisting the services of Hospice.  Not sure what I'm looking for, but it's kind of when I hear it or see it, I'll know it.

We both want her to be able to stay here for as long as she can, but there are obvious limits to spending the rest of your time in an RV.  I have a limit to what I can do for her, especially in terms of her bathroom responsibilities.  It will be a challenge, but I'm up for it.

We also have to get a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) form filled out and handy.  EMT's are obligated in the State of Texas to do everything to bring back a patient whose heart has stopped.  Having this DNR will relieve them of that obligation.

I hope it's going to be a long, long process.  She was given two years and told to "get her things in order" in the spring of 2014.  Here we are about to be in the year 2020.

Bonus Day 4 (December 16th)

This was a doctor's appointment and a chemo treatment.  It wasn't a good day.  Connie couldn't make the walk with her walker from the rig to the truck.  It was tough to watch.  But, again, she was a trooper and gutted it out.  We used the wheelchair the rest of the day.

We met with her Oncologist and I told the story from the 12th.  He basically said the brain is starting to shut her body down.  On the 12th, it shut it down then restarted.  It would continue to happen until it couldn't restart and she'd be gone.

He gave us the option of doing the next two treatments, a week off, then meeting with him on the first Monday of the New Year.  However, he said things weren't going to get better.  In most cases, they were going to get worse and the shut downs would be more frequent.

The other option was to skip the treatment and consult Hospice.  He gave us time to talk and decide.

We talked.  We talked about when this all started (back in 2013), we would always opt for quality of life vs. quantity.  Right now, her quality was terrible.  She doesn't want to go to the beach.  She doesn't want to sit out in the sun.  She spends 12-16 hours in bed, the rest of the time in the recliner.  We decided we're at that point.  She simply said, "Let's go home."

With those 3 words, we began the end of our time together.

Bonus Days 2 & 3 (December 14th-15th)

We had a pretty uneventful rest of our cruise.  We got back to L.A.  We were going to do a little sight seeing, have a nice dinner, then an early morning flight so we could get back to Texas and pick up the dogs.  Connie never got out of the hotel bed from noon till the next morning save for about an hour in the recliner.

The sight seeing turned out being me walking across the street to an AM/PM to buy a couple of beers, stopping at McDonald's on the way back for Nuggets and Fries.  Watched the Army/Navy game, then the President's Cup.

The flight back was uneventful to Sacramento where we picked up our connection to Austin.  The plane had started boarding when we got to the gate, so we couldn't preboard and got seated five rows from the front.

Mid flight, she had to use the restroom.  It took about 4 minutes for her to go those 5 rows.  While she was in the restroom, a couple in the front row offered to give up their seats.  "We thought we had it bad.  But after seeing her, we know there are people who have it worse."  It mirrored what we had seen the entire trip.  Nothing but kindness and offers of help (except for the driver of the Holiday Inn shuttle bus.  I got a real thoughtful "be careful" as I loaded and unloaded her wheelchair, our checked bag, my computer bag and my wife."  Thanks, Dick -- sure that was his name.  To contrast, the shuttle drivers going and coming from the Parking Spot wouldn't let me touch a thing and helped anchor my wife.  They were compensated.  Dick wasn't.  Don't be like Dick.)

She rallied for the ride back, and I thought we were going in the right direction.

Bonus Days Begin (December 12th)

We went on a 3N cruise from Long Beach that was an inaugural for the Carnival Panorama.  Connie didn't handle any part of it well.  As usual, she was a trooper, but she probably spent more time in bed than out of it.  We both lost weight.  On a cruise.  Let that sink in.

I kidded her earlier in the week, that I didn't want her going all Titanic on me.  Today, it happened.  She said she had to use the bathroom, but had no use of her legs.  I quasi carried her to the bathroom, but she couldn't hold herself up to get on the toilet.  Then, she did what she went into the bathroom for.

I got her cleaned up and carried to the couch where she gave one big inhale, then a groan.  She was gone.  Then, she came back.  It was a matter of 3-5 seconds at most.  You would think passing away at sea for a cruise addict would be romantic.  It was freaking terrifying.

We got her back into bed, and she went to sleep.  I didn't know if it was the end or just another chapter.  Having done this 3 previous times, I knew that a ship's doctor couldn't do anything.  She either needed to sleep, or she was going to pass.  If I called in the Doctor, she was going to get off loaded in Mexico.  She would NOT have been happy.  I texted my daughter.  We both made the decision to ride it out.

It was the right call in the end.  And so, every day from here forward, is a Bonus Day with my wife.

Update on Connie, part whatever

A week ago Monday (October 14th), Connie had a treatment scheduled along with a visit with the Oncologist to discuss her two scans from the previous week of her full body and her brain.

As we've talked about before, chemo only works on the disease that's below the neck.  The scans showed very little progression, not enough to be concerned.  So the chemo has been working.  In the race for cancer to gain traction on my wife's body, right now the brain has taken the lead again.

The brain scans, however, showed "significant" progression.  His opinion was that the brain needed to be evaluated and we needed to go over things with our neuro oncologist at the Cleveland Clinic.  We got a "virtual visit" scheduled with them for today, Friday, the 25th.  He gave Connie the option of going through with the treatment or waiting till we've heard from the neuro surgeon.  She chose to skip the treatment on the 14th and 21st.  Basically, while keeping the body under check is necessary, if the brain gets too far ahead, it trumps the body.

It's really no different than the position we were in this past January, or the March the year before.

Met with the Neuro surgeon today via "virtual visit", and, similar to the last time, he can't tell if it's progression of the lesion or if it's radiation necrosis from past treatments.  We're going to do a month of steroids to reduce the swelling.  After that, around the week of Thanksgiving, we'll shoot new pictures of the brain.  We'll send those to Cleveland Clinic for assessment and do another virtual visit probably in the first two weeks of December.

Got Connie back on the chemo schedule a week from Monday, so she'll be resuming those.  We appreciate all the love and support.  While I don't answer everyone, please know that we're feeling the love.

Weekend in review and week ahead

This past Wednesday, we went to our first Whacky Wednesday at the Back Porch.  Connie didn't last too long in the heat, but she hung in there.

We went to a new bar Thursday night (Lelo's, the former Wild Horse Saloon and Grill) for the Parrotheads of Port Aransas Fourth Thursday Happy Hour and Connie was a trooper.  Liked Lelo's.  The burgers/buns were fantastic.  It was a huge turnout.

Friday was a big test for us.  I went to play golf while Connie stayed home with the girls.  She got along famously.  First time I've done that since June 4th.  Always worried in Amherst since there were so few people there during the week.  That night, I had committed to work on the food committee for the Wings Party of the PHC and I helped at the beach party, while Connie stayed back.

Saturday night, I helped on the food committee at the Gala while keeping tabs on Connie at home.  Again, she did great -- there was even a beer or two missing when I got back.

This week is going to suck for her.  Last treatment, her port couldn't be accessed (as was the case towards the end at the Cleveland Clinic), and she had to go through her arm.  Made the decision to get her port replaced.  This week she's got a treatment on Monday (through her arm again), pre-op appointment at Shoreline Hospital Tuesday, the actual procedure on Wednesday, then a brain CT for the neurosurgeon in Cleveland gets done on Thursday.

Can you have too much pumpkin?

Even though, the temperatures haven't been out of the 80's here, I've been feeling a little fall-ish.  What better way than to make some Pumpkin-y things.

Last year, I waited forever for the stores here in Texas to stock the shelves with some pumpkin cream cheese spread to put on my morning bagels.  Never happened.  So this year, I decided to make a

  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk (5 ounces)
  • 1 cup mashed pumpkin (or canned pumpkin puree)
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  1. Add all of the ingredients according to your bread machine manufacturer's suggested order, with the default being the order listed in the ingredient list above.
  2. Use white bread setting, light crust.  I used a 2 lb loaf.
  3. Let your machine do its thing and enjoy the loaf when it is ready.

1 package (8 oz) 1/3-less-fat cream cheese (Neufchâtel), softened
1/2 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
3 tablespoons packed brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
(Can’t get enough cinnamon? Add 1 teaspoon of it to the mix in addition to the pumpkin pie spice for more cinnamon flavor.)
  • In large bowl, beat ingredients with electric mixer on medium speed until well combined. Pour spread into serving dish.
  • Cover; refrigerate at least 1 hour to blend flavors.
  • Serve spread with breads, crackers or apple slices. Store in refrigerator.

Last stops before Port A

We pulled into Ray Roberts Lake State Park on Thursday to spend a long weekend with our friends Fred and Vickie Porter.  Mentioned them a couple of times in our blog, but haven't given the full "how we met" story.

We started full timing at the end of December, 2010.  We spent our first winter in Tucson.  In December of 2011, we decided to stay in the Coastal Bend of Texas at Sea Breeze RV Park in Portland, TX.  They advertised in the flyers they had a Happy Hour on the porch of the Clubhouse at 4p.  Connie and I went up there early with a cooler full of beer.  Nobody there.  Decided to go inside.  Nobody.  Waited till 4:15p and made the call to leave.  Here comes this couple with a cooler and a bottle of wine.  This should be interesting.  We went inside and talked, drank and laughed until 8:30p or 9 that night.  We've been hanging out together ever since.  We've met in different places around the country.  We've met their family.  They've met ours.   We've always kept in touch, and hope we do for a long time.  Really treasure their friendship.

They're currently park hosts at this State Park north of Fort Worth along I-35.

We never have to have "something to do".  Just our company and conversation is plenty.

Our dogs get along great with their dog ("Izzy").

We turned them on to College Football a few years ago when we took them to Ole Miss and the Grove to tailgate.  Put out a spread for Saturday's RV Tailgate that included BBQ Ranch Dip (using some of the BBQ sauce from Kansas City), Salsa dip (using some of our Salsa from Sioux Falls), Crockpot Tailgate Sandwiches, Bugles Mix, and cocktail wienies.  Snacked all day, it was great.

Pulled out around 9:30a from the State Park and drove down to New Braunfels (Hill Country Cottages and RV Park).  Monday, should have about 200 miles to get to our winter home of Pioneer RV Park in Port Aransas.

Sioux Falls to OKC

We took off from Sioux Falls in 58 degree, rainy weather to head down I-29.  My goodness, the standing water from this spring's flooding was unbelievable.

We stopped at the Ameristar Casino in Council Bluffs to boondock the night.  It was Sunday and the Bengals had the 4p slot, so we went into the newly remodeled sports bar and book.  It was great.  They had a tailgater sample platter that was too much.  Loved it.

Monday, we arrived in Kansas City and stayed at the Worlds of Fun Village.  It's a part of an amusement park (that was closed on weekdays).  Great park.

Nice long concrete lots with patios and your own trash can.

We were there in part to see our BDM (Business Development Manager) for Carnival Cruise Lines, Amy Shortall.  Amy's been with Carnival for 30 years, and our BDM for South Dakota since 2013.  For the first few years, all of our correspondence was through emails.  Amazingly, I found out she thought I was kind of cold, gruff, and for some reason she thought I didn't like her.  I get that a lot.  Not sure why.  🤣🤣

A few years ago, we got to meet on a Seminar at Sea that she was hosting from Galveston.  Had a great time, and she got to realize what a nice guy I am.  🤣🤣   Of course, like everyone, she loved Connie.  Promised her the next time we were in KC, we would look her up.

She couldn't have been more generous with her time.  She came over to the rig to "see how we roll" on late Monday afternoon, had bakery goodies for the girls, and KC beer for Connie and I.  We went out to Strouds restaurant, famous for their fried chicken.  Was a really neat place.  Part of it was over 200 years old.

Tuesday, Connie and I did a brewery tour at Boulevard Brewery.  So fascinating.
Also, had some really good brews.  Every part of the brewery was top notch.

Amy joined us to tour and taste some Kansas City BBQ.

We started off at Arthur Bryant's BBQ.  Every President that's come through KC has stopped there.  I wasn't crazy about their sauce, but the meat was great.  We also got fries at each place.  In the end, Arthur Bryant's had the best.

Next we went a short way up the street to Gates & Sons BBQ.  Got a rack of ribs so we could sample the bones.  Something got screwed up, and we got their spicy sauce.  Good Lord.  If you know Connie and I, we just don't do hot.  Thought their fries were below average.

Finally, we went to Joe's Kansas City BBQ which was located in a working gasoline station. Went with brisket and pulled pork.  Both were great, and they got my vote for the tops.  Fries were 2nd to Bryant's.

Before she left us, Amy gave us a gift of other KC BBQ sauces.

She's a peach.  Will see her again in December out in Los Angeles for the inaugural of the Carnival Panorama.

Days on the road

We traveled to our home town of Wilmington (OH) Monday late afternoon, and stayed through Wednesday morning.  Visited with Connie's dad (forgot to take pictures!!!) and also stopped by an old friend from HS that opened a new shop, the Wooden Moose.

Wednesday and Thursday were total travel days.

Wednesday, we boondocked in a WalMart parking lot in Normal, IL  There was a Pizza Hut across the street for dinner, and (bonus) a bakery inside the WM for fresh donuts!

Thursday, we boondocked at the Isle Casino in Waterloo, IA.  They had a nice restaurant (one of four), The Brew Brothers, inside that had local craft beers, and some pub grub.

I had some loaded fries (pulled pork, BBQ and cheese sauce) that were fantastic.  Couldn't finish it, but they were so good.  Not sure why else people go to casinos if not for the food and drinks?

Friday we rolled into Sioux Falls, SD and the Sioux Falls KOA.  Had an appointment at 5p to renew our driver's license that we just barely made due to some construction.  Our Google GPS taking us to a closed exit (thinking it was open) then having to follow a detour back to an open exit (that was what Google thought was closed).  Let me tell you, we zipped in and out of the DMV in 32 minutes.  They were the nicest DMV workers I've ever encountered.  What a pleasant experience.

After the licenses, we went downtown to a "First Friday" event put on by Downtown Sioux Falls and met our new BDM (business development manager) for Sandals (Adults Only All Inclusive Resorts) and Beaches (Caribbean All inclusive resorts for families), Monica Huether.  Great weather and company.  Talked a lot about our business, our backgrounds, ways Sandals and Beaches is growing and thoughts for expanding our niches.

Really enjoyed the small town feel of the event.  Also got introduced to Monica's friend, Julio Espino.  Great story.  Came to Sioux Falls as an engineer, noticed there wasn't an authentic Mexican restaurant in town, so he started it.  The restaurant did well, but people started wanting his salsa.  So, he started marketing his Inca salsa and sold the restaurant to his sister.  He's getting outlets at Hy-Vee, Wal Marts and working on expanding elsewhere (including H-E-B in Texas).  Fascinating conversation on the ins and outs of his business.  Was nice enough to give us some samples, looking forward to trying them.

Need a day of rest, and what better way than to watch College Football.  Weather is supposed to get crappy, so that will make it even easier to hang in the rig.

Ohio State game, bye to our summer home, and on the road again

Spent Saturday at the rig watching Ohio State play with the Davis family.  It's almost become our end of the season tradition.

Smoked some bacon wrapped stuffed chicken thighs.  Men liked them, women not so much.  They were thick.  Was really excited about making them, was equally disappointed in them.

Friday was Connie's last chemo treatment in Ohio.  Had originally planned on leaving Timber Ridge Monday, but pushed it backed to Tuesday to give her an extra day recovery.

Did most of the seasonal things all last week, then packed Sunday.  Today (Monday) she was in great spirits and said "let's go today", so I finished everything up this morning and got ready to leave by early afternoon.  Will give her a good night sleep, then all day tomorrow to spend time with her Dad.

Always tough saying goodbye to folks, especially "The Sisters".  They've been such wonderful friends and we'll miss them.

Got into Caesar Creek around 7p.  Didn't have a reservation, so we took a "walk up" site.  No biggie AND we saved the reservation fee Reserve America charges.

The new steps and back up camera all worked great.  Also had a bonus a few weeks ago.  Camper at Timber Ridge put out a bunch of "free to good home" stuff.  Had been needing to replace my leveling blocks and he had a whole set of them.  Grabbed those babies up and tried them out today.  Perfect!

Lunch with old friends in the Flats

Fortunate today to meet up with our friends from Conneaut (and Bethany!) for a great lunch along the Cuyahoga River at Lindey's Lake House (formerly the Coastal Taco).

We met through boating in Ashtabula and used to be dock partners for a few years at Riverside Yacht Club.  They still have their boat at Conneaut Boat Club.  We had so many good times with these guys and watched both of our daughters grow up.

Had a great time catching up for the first time in a few years.

The week in review

Last week was a "good" week.

Met with our friends, the Greens, in Berea at the Cornerstone Brewery for some beverages and dinner.  (Note to self:  Don said the chicken strips are like Arby's).  Pulled pork was good, Connie said the fried green beans were good.

The weekend at the park was pretty laid back.  I did introduce a new beverage, a Pineapple-Lime Tequila Chiller.  Was really good.

Sunday, it was wakey wakey for French Toast and Bakey as the Davis family came out on their way to spending time at Ohio's Largest Indoor Water Park, Kalahari in Sandusky.

My last post on this blog

This blog was started as a way to communicate to everyone in long form about Connie and my adventures.  It turned into a way to long form gi...
